is a distributed research infrastructure including more than 90 Biobanks, biological resource centers (BRCs) and sample collections, located in different Italian regions. The majority of Italian biobanks and BRCs participate in National, European and international thematic networks. In Italy biobanks, for the most part, are located and operate in facilities and institutions (hospitals, clinical research centers) included in (or connected to) the National health system. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of University and Research support the Italian public biobanks, and the Regional Authorities are responsible for the authorization within their area of competence. The Italian Node is designed with a matrix architecture, with each biobank included in a thematic network (genetics, population, oncology etc.) and in the regional networks. According to this matrix model, has set up a pilot collaborative project with several Regions.
